When to go

Good to know
- Forbidden City tickets are real-name and released 7 days ahead; they often sell out, and the passport you booked with is checked at the gate.
- Most Great Wall sections are 1.5–2 hours from the centre; allow a full day.
- Tiananmen Square is free but needs an advance reservation with your passport (WeChat mini-program '天安门广场预约参观'); a same-day booking for the Forbidden City or National Museum also gets you in.
